In 2025, I was assigned to redesign and teach the Rizal’s Life, Works, and Writings course for the Office of the Undergraduate Studies at Air Link International Aviation College. Previously delivered face-to-face, the course needed to be reworked for online delivery in response to COVID-19 restrictions and the transition to remote learning. As is often the case in the Philippines, teachers also take on the role of instructional designer, which gave me full responsibility over the course transformation.
I started by reviewing the existing teaching manual and course materials to determine what needed to be updated, replaced, or completely reworked. I also consulted with a subject matter expert to make sure the content remained historically accurate and aligned with current academic standards. Additional research supported the development of updated, relevant course materials.
Through collaborative planning, we identified key topics and instructional strategies that would best meet the course objectives and align with the broader goals of the General Education curriculum. One of the client’s primary requirements was to keep the materials lightweight and accessible for students with limited internet bandwidth.
Once the course structure was finalized, I developed the syllabus and created a prototype of the module using Google Classroom. I used Google Docs to draft outlines and Google Slides for lesson visuals. Each lesson included knowledge checks, formative tasks, and summative assessments, all carefully aligned with subject matter insights and client expectations.
For the visual and interactive elements, I used Canva and Google Slides to design clean, accessible learning content. Once finalized and approved, the full course was migrated to Canvas LMS for implementation.
