Speech and Oral Communication Course

I was assigned to design and teach the Speech and Oral Communication course at Air Link International Aviation College. In the Philippine education system, it's common for teachers to also serve as instructional designers, so I was responsible for building the course from the ground up.

To begin, I reviewed the client’s teaching manual and academic standards. While I was already familiar with the subject matter, I needed to revisit some key elements—particularly policies for online delivery—since this course was part of a new curriculum with no existing materials in place.

I outlined the key topics, developed instructional strategies, and crafted course objectives that aligned with both the intended outcomes and the broader goals of the Department of Tourism and Office Management. Designing for an online class of 32 students came with its own set of challenges, so I planned to use Zoom as the primary platform, taking advantage of breakout rooms for live, one-on-one speech assessments and feedback sessions.

Once the course structure was set, I created the syllabus and, upon approval, moved on to developing the full module. The client required the materials to be lightweight and accessible on low bandwidth, so I ensured all content was optimized for easy access.

I built the prototype in Google Classroom, starting with the lessons using Google Docs and Slides, followed by knowledge checks, formative tasks, and summative assessments. To keep the course engaging, I incorporated gamification using Badgr—integrated with Canvas LMS—to motivate students through digital badges and achievements.

For visual appeal, I used Canva to design clean, learner-friendly content that supported both comprehension and engagement. The final course included interactive elements like quizzes, scenarios, and personalized learning pathways.

After approval, the materials were migrated to Canvas LMS. In 2022, the course was revised for another instructor and updated again to support the college’s hybrid delivery model. Minor adjustments were made, including updated references, layout improvements, and refreshed lesson examples to meet accreditation standards.
