As an instructor at Air Link International Aviation College, I was tasked with redesigning the Purposive Communication course to suit the shift to online learning during the COVID-19 lockdowns and government-mandated stay-at-home orders.
To kick off the project, I collaborated with fellow instructors—our course’s subject matter experts since we were directly involved in teaching it. In the Philippine education system, instructors often wear the hat of the instructional designer as well, which gave us full ownership of the course transformation.
During our consultations, we mapped out essential topics and brainstormed strategies to adapt existing materials for online delivery. I outlined the key topics, developed instructional strategies, and crafted course objectives that aligned with both the intended outcomes and the broader goals of the general education curriculum. I also shared insights from my previous experience as an ESL teacher to help guide our approach to virtual instruction, including practical tips on what works and what to avoid.
Once the course direction was clear, I developed the syllabus and, upon approval, created the modules. The institution had specific guidelines: materials had to be lightweight and optimized for low-bandwidth environments to ensure accessibility for all students.
I prototyped the course using Google Classroom, developing lessons through Google Docs and Slides, followed by knowledge checks, formative assessments, and summative evaluations. For visual assets, I used Canva to design clean and engaging content that met both instructional goals and client expectations.
The final module featured quizzes, interactive scenarios, and learner-friendly visuals to boost engagement. Once approved, all content was migrated to Canvas LMS for deployment.
The course underwent updates in 2022 and 2024 as part of the college’s shift to hybrid learning. These revisions included reference updates, curriculum alignment, gamification efforts, and layout improvements to meet accreditation standards.
